What does it mean to be a member of a community? How do people contribute to their communities? How do citizens come together to solve problems? As they create a timeline of a town's history and brochures about local businesses, students become townspeople and learn about community identity. When a new shopping mall is proposed, they learn the rights and responsibilities of citizens and become invested in the community's future. A complete print unit includes a teacher's handbook, 35 student portfolios, and six class sets of content cards (8–12 cards per set). A complete digital unit includes a teacher's handbook, and a CD with reproducible student portfolios, and content slides. The entire unit may be downloaded as an ebook. Grades 3–5.
